SOFIA is the an airplane and an astronomical observatory, the largest of its type in the world. It is starting to make some of the most amazing observations of the universe in the infrared. These observations cannot be done by ground based telescopes and offer the unique capability of being able to have new instruments and upgraded instruments when the aircraft returns to the airport after an observing run. What kind of instruments are being built for this unique facility? What new secrets of the cosmos will be unveiled?
Join Tony Darnell and Carol Christian during Afternoon Astronomy Coffee on April 13, 2017 at 3PM Eastern (Daylight) Time as they discuss with Matt Richter (U. California Davis), Darren Dowell (Jet Propulsion Laboratory) and Harvey Moseley (NASA) about this remarkable observatory, the science being done and the instruments being built for SOFIA.
