We live in a time when people who are interested in learning how to work with astronomical dataset and images do not need to spend a fortune on their own equipment. Instead, they can leverage the freely available data from NASA's many mission datasets, including the Hubble Space Telescope, Spitzer Space telescope, Mar Curiosity, the Mars Reconnaisance Orbiter and many others.
